I have a natural gas hot water heater. The vent goes through the sheetrock to the chimney. Well I know that I have to have some space between the sheetrock and the vent pipe, which is how its set up now. But I have approx 2 inch around the vent, and cold air coming in through the opening. I have looked online and at home depot for some type of flashing, but cant seem to find anything like a sheet metal to cover the excess hole. Any suggestions?

I want to get into the trades really wanted to do plumbing or steamfitting but its very hard to come by anything where i live…there is a company hiring 3-4 pre-apprentices for the sheet metal trade and am wondering how it compares to plumbing and steamfitting in terms of job stability and pay..and I really do not know much about sheet metal what is the average day like?

I've had rats which after 2 months of pest control they should be history. I've sealed everything off around my mobile home completely. Now, I hear this ticking sound by the vents in the floor and the furnace is always off. I keep my home on the cool side-only use it in the morning for a few minutes. I am paranoid about rats and thought they might be in the duct/vents.Terrible damage done from rats. I had a duct/vent cleaning company come out-they say they get all mice, birds and rats etc. from the ducts. However, I still hear the noise-seems to be in the morning from about 9 to 10am and at night between 8 and 10pm. I had a contractor go under the mobile home and tie everything up and secure the vents with sheet metal and screws to prevent any movement. Then the noise got worse:loud, thump, tick-tick and bang. I don't know if my water lines go along the ducts/vent lines and could cause this noise? I am not using water at these times,either. My water heater is on the other side of the mobile home-10ft away in a straight line from the bathroom/bedroom wall. The vents on either side of this wall is where I hear the noise. All the water faucets, shower etc are on the opposite side of the house from the water heater. Could the water lines from the water heater (12 yr old water heater) cause this noise running close to the vents? I've done everything I know to do.
These sounds have occurred during the past 3 months-since the rat thing. Any suggestions? anyone? please help.

I bought a tall thin bookshelf (six feet tall by twelve inches wide) and I want to secure it to a wall in my kitchen.

Unfortunately the wall is little more than under an inch of dry wall over a metal heating vent (or duct). I didn't know this until I tried drilling a spot for a screw (there's a metal plate that extends from the top of the shelf with a hole in it) and the hole opened up too wide and not nearly deep enough. I could use one of those winged things you attach to the end of screws to spring open once on the other side but I I am not willing to drill a hole through that heating vent and have gas or whatever escape.

What's more the shelf doesn't really touch the wall since the molding at the bottom near the floor is very thick and I'm not allowed to remove it. So I double screwed a piece of long wood to that top metal plate. Now, can I glue that piece of wood to my kitchen wall with anything to secure this bookshelf? I don't think wood glue will do it. I think I might be able to do this down along the sides of the shelf, too. I can attach wood to the back of the bookshelf, but can I securely attach the wood to the wall without screws?

Aside from the weight of the bookshelf this thing won't weigh much as it will only hold some cookbooks and magazines.

It is really the only place I can place this shelf so please don't tell me to move it somewhere else.

Metal roofing versus shingles?

I am debating on replacing my current roof with either shingles or metal. I am wondering what would be the best option in terms of resale value and durability. What are your opinions on each? Also, and some what more importantly, is a ridge vent necessary with a metal roof as it is with a shingled roof. My house was built in 1993 and it wasn't common to install ridge vents during that period. My metal roofing contractor has told me that they don't typically install them if they are not there already because the metal reflects heat rather than absorb it like shingles. The house has gable vents on each side. Is it a big deal and should it be done? Our electricity bill is very reasonable and I don't want to do anything to make it worse while trying to make it better. I am afraid that I may have to much heat lost during the winter. Any thoughts? im in MIchigan, and have central heat, and air. i need to remove a section of my sheet metal (boxed) heating duct to install a flexible section , so i can raise one part of the duct higher. (for framing)
i know they make these things, i have one at my furnace to connect the beginning of the duct to the furnace duct.
what is this “accordion” looking thing called?
how to i separate the existing duct ? so i can install this?
